Capturing fleeting moments while talking with God - Mercedes Evans

Welcome to the Creative Life, Happier Life Blog, thank you for agreeing to this interview! Tell us about yourself...
Hi I’m Mercedes, I live in surrey with my large family and Archie, the dog - who is incidentally my favourite child! (Obviously not true but my kids think it is…) I’m often found in the garden or more specifically in my greenhouse, which is my oasis. I particularly enjoy growing from seed and propagating my plants. The down side of having a spaniel is that he is very keen on digging - the family think he’s just copying me - but he has disastrous effects on my borders. I also enjoy cycling and walking in the woods, drinking redbush tea, red wine and gin - just not all at the same time. I became a christian when I was 21 and have been at my current church for over twenty years, which is where I met the lovely Ellen 😊
Here at CLHL we believe that creativity comes in all forms, from accounting to crochet! How does your creativity manifest itself?
I am a wedding and personal branding photographer. Yes it is a business that did start as a hobby. At the beginning I was doing newborns and families, both of which I don’t tend to do anymore. I have been doing weddings for 5 years. It’s something that I really love, just the sheer variety of the day; everything from macro to architecture to candids to groups to creative off camera flash. It’s a day where almost everyone is happy, they are in their best togs and they’re having fun - being part of this is a thrill and a privilege. Branding photography is fairly new to me and I love it too, in fact it isn’t totally different to weddings - there can be lots of variety. Particularly seeing behind the scenes of how a business functions and collaborating with the business owner to create something that they are proud of, it just ticks all the boxes for me.
How do you think using your creativity enhances your well-being?
I believe that we all need a creative outlet but for some it can take a while to find what that thing is. I tend to take my camera with me when I go out and can easily while the time away totally engrossed in what I am doing. It does give me something to focus on, without think about the stresses of life, it is time that makes me feel relaxed. Photography also makes me more aware of my surroundings, especially the light and different seasons, and because of this I think that I enjoy being more still and just watching the world around me.
How do you think using your craft helps you to connect with God?
Photography does help me connect with God - there are often little prayers like please help me with this or remind to do that. But also I remember photographing a big christian event and talking to God as I moving around and I felt Him say that my photography was a form of worship, rather like the artists painting or the dancers dancing.
Do you think God works through your skill? How?
So many people that I photograph say that they hate how they look, so it is a real blessing to give them a photograph that boosts their self esteem and helps to change how they see themselves. God loves us and we need to see ourselves as He sees us. “I am fearfully and wonderfully made” Psalm 139
Do you have any tips or golden nuggets of wisdom for any of our readers who may like to try accessing your creative skill?
Photography is all about capturing that fleeting moment in time and nowadays almost everyone has a camera in their pocket - the best camera is the one you have with you.
If you want to move off automatic, then start with aperture priority before trying manual.
Think about composition, don’t always have your subject right in the centre of the picture.
Light is all important, try photographing inside your house at different times of the day and see how the light changes and affects your photos.
Where can we find you using your creativity?
QUICK FIRE ROUND! The stuff we all really want to know!
Pen or computer? Pen
Home or abroad? Home.
On your bucket list? Hot air balloon ride
Skill you’d like to learn?
Favourite bible verse? Romans 8:28
Chocolate or cheese? Can I have both?? I can’t decide - they are both my faves
